Italian Nationalist/Soldier
(July 4, 1807-June 2, 1882)
Born in Nice, ##5080>Italy</a>

Fought for the Rio Grande province in its fight for independence from Brazil (1836-1940)
Led the 'Red Shirts' in a conquest of Sicily and Naples (1860)
Gave the southern Italian kingdoms to Piedmont-Sardinia, in hopes of creating a unified nation
Commander of the French army in the Franco-Prussian War (1871)
Succeeded in taking the Papal States from the Vatican, led by Pope Pius IX

WHY HE MIGHT BE ANNOYING

He was imprisoned or sentenced to death numerous times throughout his life.
He married three times.
His first wife was killed during one of his military exploits.
He was deported from the Piedmont Kingdom as an 'undesirable' (1848).
He is the only person in history to have refused a ##1898>New York City</a> 'ticker tape parade.'
After fighting against France in numerous battles, he joined the French Army in the Franco-Prussian War (1871).

WHY HE MIGHT NOT BE ANNOYING

The garibaldi biscuit is named after him.
He strongly supported liberal governmental reforms.
He helped unify the numerous Italian kingdoms under one centralized government.
He was offered a position in the Union Army by ##1865>Abraham Lincoln</a> (1861).
He was so popular that when he visited ##10020>London</a>, the city shut down because everyone had lined the streets to see him.
He is a national hero in ##5080>Italy</a>.
