Presuming you're not being sarcastic, thanks! Honestly, the whole beef I have with Sheehan is she flaunts herslef, capitalizing on losing her son. Am I sorry she lost her son? Of course I am. Do I pray for the safe return of our troops every night? Absolutely. But the fact that several commentators and pundits of sorts have had questions for her and her motives, and she refuses to answer, it really irritates me.
Kanye West, the guy stands up and spews some asinine b/s during a charity drive in the midst of a crisis. How is that going to solve a problem? It won't. You know what I mean?

Yeah, you don't like her for what issues she supports and I don't like her for what she represents.

I don't believe in the Iraqi War, but she just annoyed the hell out of me, and everytime I saw her I got the impression she was one of those media creations, exploitative and completely devoid of a reasonable message as it relates to tough issues, just like Terri Schiavo was for the Republicans. That she became so important to the anti-war cause proves how low this whole debate sunk during the summer.

John Murtha is probably the most heroic guy of all the people that have entered the debate in the last six months, and he actually has his facts straight. I disagree with the guy on many other issues but if he was to run for president (and I'm positive he did not do what he did for any ambitious reason, but if he did) I'd vote for him in a second. It was very brave and courageous of him. Finally we're discussing how the hell we're going to get out of there.

The hurricane was handled poorly by Bush and the policies of the Republican party directly lead to that catastrophe, but Kanye West took a stand when he did primarily for publicity purposes. I had never heard of him before he said that, now his name is everywhere. Instead of saying correctly that the reason why the levies busted was because congressional Republicans refused to raise taxes or pay for the strengthening of the levies, he pulls some stupid racism excuse out of his ass and can hardly articulate it, on top of it. And if anything good can be said about Bush it's that he is definitely not racist. On the other hand, West is an arrogant racist loser.

The levies had been in disrepair for a long time now. If Kerry had been successful in his bid and landed in the White House, the blame would be unfairly placed on him in that end. And let's not forget the morons in New Orleans who are either too illiterate or retarded to know that a mandatory evacuation means "get the hell out of here". Or how about Mayor Nagin, saying that FEMA should have comandeered Greyhound buses to evacuate citizens when they had over 200 (I think...might be more) school and transit buses just sitting there.
I am not exonerating Bush for Katrina. But I'd say amongst the federal, state, and local level, the blame should be split about even between all 3 levels.

There was a larger message that came with the Katrina hurricane that many pundits missed, and I think you missed as well.

It is a fundemental problem with what we see as important when it comes to public policy. We've become selfish, so selfish that we refuse to ever raise taxes as deficits and spending balloon to terrible proportions. Through Bush and the Republican leadership intentionally bankrupting the nation with huge spending proposals, intending to derail social programs, they have made less money available for things that prevent these kinds of disasters from being completely destablizing, like the strengthening of the levies that many scientists urged for years, decades in fact.

This was a disaster waiting to happen, and when it did, nobody could handle its aftermath, and I blame the ethics of the Republicans, primarily the political philosophy of George W. Bush that relies on reaction instead of prevention and the complete ignoring of science. I think we should keep taxes low, but this should be a lesson to us that it can't be at the expense of protecting our citizens, and if the Washington Republicans would have allowed the approval of stronger levies that Democrats and state Republicans asked for, this would not have happened. An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.

This is part of my larger political theory, that Republicans, or any politician that advocates low taxes in the face of looming deficits, are compromising our national security and letting us take loans from countries with terrible human rights violations (like China), on top of not spending the money on things that really protect Americans. They favor idealism and fix the facts to match their idealism, and that is more dangerous to this country than terrorism.

This is in reply to Blossman referring to New Orleanians who stayed as "illiterate" and "retarded...."  Some of the people who were left behind simply had no means, as in funds, to leave the city because they could not afford it.  They were not illiterate.  They were not retarded.  They were poor, as in had little to no money....I hate when the poor are shamed! Now, the others who had the money and chance to leave but stayed behind, well, they were just foolish.

I understand your feelings on that, black_chic. However, before the hurricane arrived, there were numerous charities offering rides pro bono to safe areas. I'm sorry if it was misinterpreted as being critical of the poor based on the reason of being poor. It wasn't meant to be that way. It was critical of those who, despite countless warnings and offerings of transportation, did not leave.

DHirschp, exactly, nail on the head. The bureaucracy as a whole was the main problem. Thank you and kudos.

It's incredibly easy to blame faceless evils like bureaucracy for the response problem, to write the entire tragedy off as just another bureaucratic blunder, but in reality that is just a poorly constructed distraction from what the root cause of the issue was: the levies were not strong enough to protect the city of New Orleans. The reason being? Washington politics and budget cuts, and this idea that policy is policy, and the experts warnings should be subservient to it. Our priorities in spending are unrealistic, we spend money on expensive and mostly useless "missile defense shields" but not on what really protects American cities. That is the lesson we should have learned from Katrina.
