TOP 100 DIVAS of ALL TIME!

Sea Diva and I are joining forces togetehr to compile and comment on a list of the 100 Divas of all time (just for the heck of it.) The list will be compiled by myself and commentary will be offered by our own resident diva. I am trying to base the list mostly on music and stage persona rather than critique anyone's personal life. So let the fun begin...

    Jack,

While I await the Annoyatorium Diva's commentary, let me ask you, what critera are you using for this countdown?

Reason I ask is I'm SHOCKED that both Beyonce & Britz are rated so low. Amy Winehouse higher than those two confuses the shit outta me. My guess is your idea of diva-like behavior and mine are two completely different animals.

Oy that's a hard question to answer, particularly this early on the list. The lower part of the list is well sort of more random than the top half. At the end of the day it's really just one person's opinion. As with any list it can be debated who should be higher, lower, number one. But This early on I didn't put much though into who should be in what spot. Anyways it's just for fun.

    Now onto the next part...

    78. Kylie Minogue (1968-)
Songs Include: Love At First Sight, Spinning Around http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qaGS3Uts704

    77. Laura Branigan (1957-2004)
Songs Include: Gloria, Self Control http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=355Fk8drgZE

I can't wait to see who your #1 is, becuase I woulda given that to Mariah Carey, whom you've inexplicably listed as #75, confirming that our criterias for diva are completely different.

A few diva comments on 100-91...

    100.  Trisha Yearwood - No complaint here, simply because she's the diva's mom's favorite artist and I'm more familiar with her hit songs than I am with most country artists.

    99.  Sara Evans - The only song I know is her cover of 'I Could Not Ask For More,' but I liked Edwin McCain's original version better.  As for whether she counts as a diva, I question her level of sass.  A diva should be sassy.

    98. Ofra Haza - I've never heard of and 97. June Carter Cash I'm not familiar with her music.

    96. Britney Spears - She's definitely had the right amount of meltdowns and sheer craziness to qualify as a diva, but one thing she's lacking is a showstopping power ballad.  A diva should be able to belt it out, but, she gets bonus diva points for the 'It's Britney, bitch' opening to 'Gimme More.'

    95.  Amy Grant - 'That's What Love Is For' and 'I Will Remember You' certainly qualify her for diva consideration, but, I don't know if a primarily Christian artist would want to be considered a diva, or, if she'd even want to what needs to be done to achieve diva status.  Wait, the details of her romance with Vince Gill are a bit scandalous, so maybe she is willing to go that extra diva mile...

    94.  Irene Cara - A fair ranking for sure; she's definitely a bit batty during interviews.

    93.  Beyonce Knowles - I would've ranked her much higher on the list, if only because she's an expert at using the diva fan to get that hair flowing during her stage performances and videos.  A marriage to an elite rapper, combined with the recent "faking pregnancy" rumors, are certainly enough to advance her at least 10 places without taking anything else into consideration!

    92.  Katy Perry - Five #1 singles from the same album, plus the 'love yourself' message of the 'Firework' video, make her a good choice.

    91.  Joan Osbourne - There is definitely some nostalgia associated with 'One Of Us.'  Is she diva-esque?  I don't remember how many juicy headlines she generated back in her prime.  What I do remember is that she opted for more of a gender neutral grunge style--a diva should embrace her femininity.  Flashy skirts and stage costumes, not blue jeans and flannel.

Don't cry because it's over; smile because it happened.

A few diva comments on 90-81...

    90.  Jewel - A good folk diva; lots of nostalgia associated with her music.

    89.  Carrie Underwood - Thank the diva Gods for her tabloid relationship with Tony Romo!  She's got a solid singing voice, but without the Romo relationship, I don't know if she'd have diva edge.  'Before He Cheats' is definitely a diva anthem, but, I can't stand that song!

    88.  Mary J. Blige - This diva would've ranked much higher on my list.  Her over-the-top stage performances and powerhouse vocals can't be matched by any of the mainstream r&b divas from the last ten years.

    87.  Dolores O'Riordan - Angelic voice plus commentary on the political situation in her native country plus shaved head equals a diva approved rock chick!

    86.  Selena - She was murdered by the president of her fan club, and, her biopic launched the career of another diva.  In addition, she had one of the best diva ballads of the 90's with 'Dreaming Of You.'

    85.  Amy Lee - One of the purest and most beautiful female voices in rock music.  Her two biggest diva qualifying issues are her relative anonymity and the fact that her band's music wasn't taken seriously (a la Creed).

    84.  Leona Lewis - 'Bleeding Love' is a 2000s diva classic ballad.  Unfortunately, she's struggled to find follow up hits.

    83. Vera Lynn - Not familiar

    82.  Amy Winehouse - She had the voice and the right amount of 'crazy' to be a modern day diva, but, true divas are a complete package.  Her hygiene wasn't the best.  A diva is supposed to be glamorous, not grotesque.

    81.  Faith Hill - A diva worthy marriage to a fellow country superstar, a powerful singing voice and stunning beauty.  Diva bonus points - a popular holiday anthem with 'Where Are You Christmas?'

Don't cry because it's over; smile because it happened.

It might not be enough, but that nose ring she used to sport was rather flashy!

Vera Lynn was one of the biggest British music stars during World War II, with her famous anthem 'We'll Meet Again,' a rather tragic war anthemn (I guess you can call her the British Betty Grable). This diva is still kickin at the age of 94! It was also noteable as the song used in the final scene of Dr. Strangelove.

A few diva thoughts on 80-71...

    80.  Melissa Manchester - Crisp, beautiful singing voice.

    79.  Martina McBride - Great voice, plus, she sings a bunch of female empowerment anthems.

    78.  Kylie Minogue - An international diva for sure, but, her success in the U.S. was rather limited.  Her voice was kind of muffled on her big comeback hit 'Can't Get You Out Of My Head.'

    77.  Laura Branigan - Love her voice!  The diva-esque 'Shattered Glass' was one of the best almost-top-40 hits of the 80s.

    76.  Lara Fabian - Another international diva whose career was rather limited in the U.S.  'I Will Love Again' was definitely a diva dance club anthem.

    75.  Mariah Carey - While I enjoy commenting on your list for fun, I'm shocked Mariah ranks this low.  In my mind, Mariah is easily one of the top 10 divas of all-time.  She's the complete package - an international star, a lengthy list of well known hits, impressive vocal range, glamorous, several periods of craziness and ridiculousness, celebrity relationships, celebrity feuds, ditzy interviews, expectations of being treated like royalty.

    74.  Gloria Gaynor - 'I Will Survive' is definitely a diva anthem.

    73.  Toni Braxton - Sexy deep voice, and, she's never shied away from her sex symbol status.

    72.  Tina Arena - Not familiar.

    71.  Adele - Definitely a modern diva, even if she seems a bit too modest and humble at this particular point.  I haven't read anything about airplane outbursts or yelling at stylists or anything like that, so she has a bit of work to do.  However, with those pipes, I hope she has a lengthy career!  Big girls get bonus diva points!

Don't cry because it's over; smile because it happened.

This is my point exactly Diva. Mary Wells at #57 while Mariah at #75? No way in hell - that's just insane and ridiculous. It's as if Jack put 100 names in a bucket and pulled them out one by one for this list.

It may be, as Jack put it, one person's opinion, but I, as one person, wants to go on record and say this list, plain & simple, SUCKS!
