I Get a Kill: Actress Linda Cristal @ 89

Linda Cristal, most famous for starring as Victoria Cannon on the '60s TV western The High Chaparral, has died. She was 89.
According to The New York Times, her son Jordan Wexler confirmed that the Argentinean-born actress passed away in her sleep on Saturday local time at her home in Beverly Hills in Los Angeles.
Born on February 23, 1931 in Buenos Aires, Cristal (née Marta Victoria Moya), lost both of her parents to carbon monoxide poisoning when she was 13-years-old.
A student of the musical arts, she studied voice and piano before marrying her first husband Argentine actor Tito Gómez when she was 16. Several weeks later, the marriage was annulled and she briefly considered becoming a nun, like many of the other women in her family.
While travelling in Mexico with her brother, Cristal caught the eye of the son of Mexico's then-president Miguel Alemán, producer Miguelito Alemán, who cast her in one of his films.
The actress made a dozen movies in Mexico before she moved to Hollywood to take her first English-speaking role in the 1956 film Comanche.
In 1958 she starred in the comedy The Perfect Furlough. Playing Sandra Roca, aka 'The Argentine Bombshell', the role earned her a win at the Golden Globes taking home the "New Star of the Year" award.
n 1968, the actress recalled to The Boston Globe auditioning for the TV western series The High Chaparral, which would become her most well-known role.
"The scene they handed me to read was all tenderness and sweetness, and I knew they were looking for a heroine with fire and spunk," she told the newspaper at the time. "So I asked them if I could throw away the script and just improvise.
"I made up stories showing love, hate, passion, envy, jealousy, etc. I tried a scene as a streetwalker. I was a mother who had lost a son in the war. Before I was through, I had taken off my hat, my shoes and even my jacket. In my intensity I was all over these people, roughing them up. But I walked out with the contract."
The show ran for five years from 1967 to 1971. The late star played the daughter of Don Sebastián, a Mexican rancher who winds up marrying Big John Cannon (played by Leif Erickson). Together, along with Cannon's brothers, the couple transforms the High Chaparral ranch into a cattle empire. In 1970, Cristal won a second Golden Globe, this time in the category "Actress in A Drama TV Series" for her portrayal of Victoria Cannon.
he Golden Globe winner's other acting credits include John Wayne's The Alamo (1960), Two Rodes Together (1961) and her final film Mr. Majestyk (1974). Aside from The High Chaparral on TV she starred in Rawhide, The Tab Hunter Show, Barnaby Jones and The Love Boat.
In 1988, she appeared on General Hospital as Dimitra, the daughter of mobster Victor Jerome (played by Jack Axelrod).
Cristal was previously married to Robert W. Champion from 1958 to 1959 and to actor Yale Wexler from 1960 to 1966 with whom she shared two children — Jordan and Gregory Wexler.
Cristal is survived by her two sons and two grandchildren.
